The Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus has been divided into the government-controlled south and the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is not recognized only by Turkey. The south has its own visa regulations, while the north has the same visa regulations as Turkey.
A tourist visa may be issued solely for leisure travel such as vacationing, sightseeing, cruising, and such other activities for recreation. Visitors must apply for a business visa if they intend to conduct business or commercial activity during any portion of their trip to Cyprus. Those intending to undertake paid employment in Cyprus need to obtain a work visa.
For United States citizens entering the government-controlled south, a visa is not required for a visit of up to 90 days. For a longer stay, a visa or residence permit is required. Likewise, American citizens entering the Turkish Cypriot-administered north need not obtain a visa for visits of less than 90 days. However, stays for 90 days or longer require a temporary residency visa issued by Turkish Cypriot authorities, who are known to have deported foreigners who violated this requirement. This requirement cannot be circumvented by periodically visiting the government-controlled south. It is important to note, however, that the Government of Cyprus does not recognize residence permits or visa issued by Turkish Cypriot government in the north.
